Jon Wells

2019 WSHF inductee

 

 

Wells was a standout athlete and coach at Riverdale High School, earning first-team All-North Central Conference honors in football four times before graduating in 1990. He also earned All-NCC first-team honors twice in basketball and was a regional finalist in track and field. He coached football and basketball for the Falcons.

In football, he earned All-Northwest District honors three times and holds the school record for the longest punt (80 yards) and longest touchdown from scrimmage (97 yards). He earned All-Ohio honorable mention one season.

Wells averaged 15.9 points per game during his high school basketball career for the Falcons, ranking third in school history. His 17.1 scoring average in 1988-89 ranks 10th best overall, and he led the team in scoring his junior and senior years. He scored a high of 32 points against Wynford in a game 1990 and also had games of 30 and 29 points during his career. The Falcons finished 43-20 during his three varsity seasons, led by a 16-5 mark in his sophomore season.

In track and field, he was a regional finalist in the 3200 relay his freshman year and in the 100 and 200 dashes his junior year. He was a Hardin County champion in the 200 dash.

Wells was a coach for 14 years on the Riverdale football staff, and was the offensive coordinator on the school’s only playoff team in school history in 2008. He led the Falcons’ junior high team to an undefeated season with a 7-0 record in the North Central Conference in 2004. He also was a basketball coach for nine seasons for the boys and girls junior high and junior varsity teams. He has volunteered with the softball and track and field programs as a coach.

Wells and his wife, Angela, live outside of Forest and have two children, Allysha Beck and Justin Wells, and a granddaughter, Kearstin Beck, with a second granddaughter due in July.
