Jake Moyer

2020 WSHF inductee

A longtime coach on both the high school and college levels, Jake Moyer is a 1967 graduate of Mohawk High School. Moyer excelled in football as team MVP his junior year and went onto play at Bluffton College, lettering as a freshman, and then at Heidelberg University, earning a letter during his junior and senior years.

While with the Warriors, Moyer also participated in track and basketball for three seasons and wrestling for one season. He also took part in vocal music for four years. In college, he received his teaching certificates in health and physical education, later also getting certified in English plus special education. His career also included time as athletic director at Mohawk.

Moyer began coaching for Robert Howser at Mohawk and later for Jack Mental. After four years, he began a 13-year run as head coach of the Warriors, going 66-62, which included the 1985 team that was the most successful in the school’s history in the North Central Conference (28 years from 1962 to 1990). They had two more wins than any other previous team, finishing 9-3, and were the first to qualify for the playoffs, finishing as regional runner-up to Mogadore. The Warriors gave up just 2.8 yards per play and 128.7 yards per game.

His coaching career also included six years as head high school and four years as junior high track and field coach. He spent time coaching at both Tiffin and Heidelberg universities and four years at Upper Sandusky High School, including a playoff appearance in 2012. Later, Moyer returned to coaching as an assistant at Mohawk under Eric Daniel. Moyer also was an assistant for another former player, Shane Jacoby. At least five of his former players have gone onto be successful coaches as well.

Moyer was born in Tiffin in 1949 to Don and Sally Moyer and has one younger sibling, Dan. He attended Melmore Elementary School through eighth grade. There he had many good teachers who influence his career in teaching and coaching, including Ralph Kieffer.

Moyer’s family includes his wife, Patricia; son Erin and his wife Christine; son Alex and his wife Stephanie; and grandchildren Elizabeth, Jacob and Jonah. He also has three step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
