Chuck
Brinker 2019 WSHF honoree The Wyandot County Sports Hall of
Fame is proud and honored to recognize Wyandot County Indians Special
Olympics basketball great Chuck Brinker. His athletic accomplishments while
representing the Indians were exemplary and what true legends are made of. Brinker, who is rightfully
considered the greatest player the Indians have ever had, also was the first
to have his number retired. The big number 34 was lifted to the rafters Dec.
13, 2007. His accomplishments on the
basketball court were extraordinary. He is by far the greatest scorer in
school history and once notched a 72-point outing in a 98-84 victory over
long-time rival, Richland County. Surprisingly, Brinker was actually outscored
that night by the Bears’ Jimmy Gordon, who tallied every Richland County
point. Gordon was on-hand to congratulate Brinker the night his number was
retired. At 6-foot-2, Brinker was hard to
stop. He was a lefty and played outstanding defense as well but perhaps his
greatest attribute was his knowledge of the game. He knew right where to be
and how he could use that to his team’s advantage. For 34-plus years Brinker roamed the basketball court for Angeline. That’s a longevity not many athletes can brag about. But then again, legends do things that most people do not.
