Chad Sowers

2024 WSHF inductee

A 2003 graduate of Mohawk High School, Chad Sowers was the Division III 189-pound state wrestling champion in 2002 and also placed second at 215 pounds in 2003 and third at 189 pounds in 2001.

He was a four-time Midland Athletic League and sectional champion, three-time district placer and finished with a 166-19 career record.

As a junior in 2002, Sowers opened his state tournament with a technical fall victory and then won by major decision to reach the semifinals, where he had another major decision win. He then won a 3-1 decision against Grandview Heights’ Nick Barte to become the Warriors’ first and only state wrestling champion. With two of Sowers’ teammates placing, Mohawk finished ninth in the Division III team standings.

Up a weight class in 2003, Sowers came up short of repeating. He was dominant in his first three matches, winning by major decision, pin and then major decision again, but he suffered a 12-10 loss in the championship bout against Sandusky St. Mary’s Matt Stookey. Sowers nearly rallied from a deficit but was not credited with a potential match-tying takedown in the final seconds. With that, Stookey avenged his only loss of that season, an 8-4 setback against Sowers, who lost for the first time and finished the year 51-1. Until that match, Sowers had not been taken down all season. The Warriors placed eighth as a team in 2003.

Sowers also excelled in football, earning All-Ohio first-team honors in 2002 when he was the MAL co-defensive player of the year.
