1985
Mohawk football 2023 WSHF inductee The 1985 Mohawk football team had one
of the greatest seasons in school history, earning the first playoff berth in
school history. Coached by Wyandot Sports Hall of Famer
Jake Moyer, Mohawk had only 130 boys in the top three grades, making it the
smallest school in the North Central Conference, but that did not stop the
Warriors from unprecedented success that came from a power running game,
tough defense and heart, pride and closeness. Mohawk ended the season with a 9-3 record, winning two
more games than any other previous team in school history and throughout its
28-year affiliation with the NCC through 1990. The Warriors reached the
regional finals with a 21-7 victory against league rival Buckeye Central in
the semifinals at Tiffin Columbian Stadium. They lost 25-6 to Mogadore in what
was known as the “Mud Bowl” at Ashland Community Stadium. Only the 1999
Mohawk team has gone as far in the playoffs. The Warriors went 7-2 in the regular
season with a 21-6 loss to River Valley and a 14-13 overtime loss against
Pleasant. They did not give up a touchdown in their seven regular season
victories, which included six shutouts and a 6-3 season-opening victory
against Tiffin Calvert. They did not allow a touchdown in their first four
games, and opponents averaged just 4.2 points per game against them in the
regular season and 5.8 points per game overall. Ben Nutter led Mohawk’s rushing attack
with eight touchdowns, while Duane Coldiron added six touchdowns. Bruce
Hannam threw for six touchdowns and ran for eight more in the Warriors’
balanced backfield. Nutter earned All-Ohio defensive honors.
